‘BLACK PANTHER’ Now the Highest Domestic Grossing Superhero Movie Ever

Black Panther has been breaking records left and right and has just recently set a new record.

Black Panther recently surpassed The Avengers to take the fifth all-time highest grossing film domestically and the highest all-time grossing superhero film domestically. Internationally, the film rests at a comfortable 12th highest gross and 3rd highest for a superhero movie. This is especially groundbreaking because solo superhero titles are not as common in the top-grossing films of all-time.

Black Panther‘s success is especially important because of its all-black cast, which left some skeptical of its ability to do well. The film is important for its representation and its socially relevant story. This film has blown away any criticisms that existed before it was released.

Black Panther has currently made over $630 million domestically and over $1.2 billion internationally. Having released just over a month ago (February, 16), the movie is still going strong in theaters and will continue to make millions more.

The movies that currently sit above Black Panther in domestic gross (in ascending order) are Jurassic World ($652M), Titanic ($659M), Avatar ($760M), and The Force Awakens ($936M).

It is also director Ryan Coogler’s third film and his highest rated on Rotten Tomatoes.  His first film, Fruitvale Station, earned a 94%, his second film, Creed, earned a 95%, and his most recent film, Black Panther, has earned a 98%. Every Coogler film has done better than the last, both financially and critically.

The upcoming Avengers: Infinity War is likely to beat out Black Panther for highest grossing superhero movie of all time, but that does not diminish the importance of a film with a black-lead and almost entirely black cast doing so well.
