Nick Spencer ramps up the stakes in this latest issue of Secret Empire, as Black Widow prepares to do what needs to be done: Kill Captain America. Not everything goes according to plan in Secret Empire #7, though.
While not as strong as the emotional conclusion of the previous issue, the comic still succeeds in keeping the tension at an all time high in the event. Andrea Sorrentino returns to illustrates issue 7, and does so wonderfully. The art style compliments the dark atmosphere of the issue wonderfully, and really makes you feel each hit the characters take, as well as illustrate the destruction and moodiness of the setting. The overall art in this issue encapsulates the Secret Empire event perfectly.
The main characters that take the spotlight in this issue are Black Widow, Steve Rogers, and Mile Morales Spider-Man, as well as a surprise appearance by The Punisher. This issue felt much more small in scale as compared to the other issues, and went by faster than the other issues. This smaller, more contained story of Secret Empire is overall used to move the character of Captain America to a new and exciting place, one that will set the trajectory for the final three issues in this series.
A problem this issue has (as well as others in this series) is the variation and inconsistincey of the artwork in the book. While Andrea Sorrentino is the main artist this issue, we also switch between artists Leinil Francis You and Rod Reis, which is a bit of a distraction to say the least, and one that hasn’t;t really bothered me up until this issue of the event, as it sort of takes the reader out of the story.
The story of this issue (and possibly the story for the event as the whole) really focuses on the mindset of different heroes of the previous generation and their methods of dealing with the situation at hand. Another great addition was the loop that was closed that was first set up in the previous event, Civil War 2, finally answering a long burning question since the event ended and Secret Empire began. While it has been fun and interesting to watch these heroes scramble to fix the status quo, it will be great to see things come to a exciting and intense conclusion for the next three issues, thanks to the return of a certain missing character since ht beginning of Secret Empire. With the Emotional stakes at an all time high for the series, Secret Empire is set for what seems to be the most intense and action packed conclusion to an event yet. – Ernesto Valenzuela
