Updated Sep 28, 2026: Everything below is checked against Rockstar’s trailers, its GTA 6 site and Take-Two’s announcements. Game Informer’s cover story lands tomorrow, and we’ll add anything that changes the comparison.
GTA 6 vs GTA 5, in one breath: you’re trading Los Santos for Vice City, three guys for a two-person crew, a map that’s reportedly twice as big, and a game that only runs on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It lands Nov 19, 2026 for $79.99, more than 13 years after GTA 5 first came out on Sept 17, 2013. That’s a long time between drinks, and a lot has changed. Here’s what’s actually confirmed, what’s only reported, and what nobody knows yet.
Quick ground rule: we’re sticking to Rockstar’s own trailers and site, Take-Two’s announcements and reputable reporting. If something is secondhand or rumored, we say so. For the full launch rundown (preload, editions, pre-order bonus), our GTA 6 release date hub has it all.

Setting: from Los Santos to Leonida
GTA 5 was Rockstar’s Los Angeles: Los Santos plus the deserts and hills of Blaine County, all inside the fictional state of San Andreas. GTA 6 heads east. Rockstar’s pitch drops Jason and Lucia on “the darkest side of the sunniest place in America,” in a conspiracy that stretches across the state of Leonida, per the official pre-order announcement.
The bigger change is structure. GTA 5 was basically one big city with countryside attached. Leonida has six named regions on Rockstar’s GTA 6 site: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. Each one gets its own vibe, economy and local weirdos. It’s also Vice City’s first mainline return since the 2002 game, so there’s a nostalgia bonus built in. Our GTA 6 map explainer goes region by region.
Two protagonists instead of three
GTA 5’s big swing was three leads, retired bank robber Michael, street hustler Franklin and full-chaos Trevor, and you could flip between them almost anytime. GTA 6 goes smaller and tighter: two leads, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, and they’re a couple. Trailer 2 sells them as a Bonnie-and-Clyde duo who need each other to survive, which is a very different energy from GTA 5’s three guys who mostly annoyed each other.
Lucia is also a milestone. She’s not technically the first playable woman in the series, since the top-down 1997 original had female characters to pick from, but she’s the first fully written, voiced female lead of the modern GTA era, as TheGamer lays out. Rockstar hasn’t said exactly how switching between Jason and Lucia works yet. Our GTA 6 characters guide covers both of them, plus the supporting cast.
A bigger map (reportedly)
Here’s where we have to be careful. Rockstar still hasn’t published an official map or a size in writing. What we have comes from August’s creator previews: Rockstar’s Rob Nelson reportedly told YouTuber TGG that Leonida is about twice the size of GTA 5’s map and three times Red Dead Redemption 2’s, with Vice City itself roughly double Los Santos, according to Screen Rant. That’s a Rockstar comparison passed along by an attendee, so we’d call it very likely, not gospel.
Tech: new consoles only, and a 30fps target
GTA 5 launched on PS3 and Xbox 360, then got re-released on PS4 and Xbox One, PC, and eventually PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2022. GTA 6 skips the old generation entirely. It’s PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, which is exactly why the footage looks the way it does. Rockstar said Trailer 2 was captured entirely in-game on PS5, split between gameplay and cutscenes.
The catch is frame rate. After a studio visit in August, YouTuber Davy Jones reported that Nelson said the game is currently targeting 30fps on all consoles, and that he’d need to check with the tech team about a 60fps option at launch or later (Push Square). Compare that with GTA 5’s current-gen version, which has a Performance mode that targets 60 FPS. So yes, the old game on your PS5 might feel smoother than the new one, at least on day one.
Platforms and the PC question
Neither game launched on PC, so in a weird way nothing has changed. GTA 5 reached PC in April 2015, about 19 months after its console debut. GTA 6 doesn’t have a PC version announced at all. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick’s line so far is that PC is becoming “more and more important” to the company, which isn’t a date. Our GTA 6 PC explainer digs into Rockstar’s porting history and what it suggests.
Price: GTA 5’s special edition is GTA 6’s standard
This is the change you’ll feel in your wallet. GTA 6’s Standard Edition is $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition is $99.99, per Take-Two. Back in 2013, $79.99 was what GTA 5’s Special Edition cost, the premium tier with bonus in-game content. Now it’s the price of entry.
And the “physical” version works differently too. GTA 5 shipped on discs. GTA 6’s boxed edition is a download code in a box, with no disc inside.
The release gap: 13 years and counting
No two mainline GTA games have ever been this far apart. GTA 4 to GTA 5 took a little over five years. GTA 5 to GTA 6 will be 13 years and two months, and it took two delays to get there. Part of the reason Rockstar could wait: GTA 5 never stopped selling. Take-Two says it has now sold in over 230 million units across three console generations.
What’s rumored or still unknown
- A new GTA Online. Not announced. Take-Two has only said it’ll keep supporting the current GTA Online. GTA 5’s online mode arrived two weeks after launch. Nobody official has said whether GTA 6 follows that pattern.
- A 60fps mode. Undecided, per Nelson’s reported comments. Treat any “confirmed 60fps on PS5 Pro” headline as rumor.
- Exact map size in square miles. Fan estimates only.
- The 2022 leak. In September 2022, Rockstar confirmed a network intrusion that exposed early development footage, as Variety reported. We don’t use any of it here. It was years-old work-in-progress, and it isn’t a reliable guide to the final game.
Let’s be real: the upgrade comes with fine print
Everything Rockstar has shown looks like a generational leap. But a few of these changes aren’t wins for players:
- 30fps in 2026 stings. GTA 5 on PS5 gives you a 60 FPS mode today. Asking players to step down to 30 for a game that costs $20 more is a tough sell, even if the world is way denser.
- $80 plus a code in a box. You’re paying more for a “physical” copy you can’t lend or resell like a disc. That’s two quiet downgrades wrapped in one shiny box.
- Still no PC, again. GTA 5 made PC players wait about 19 months. Thirteen years later, the playbook hasn’t moved an inch.
- The big numbers came secondhand. The map size and frame rate both reached fans through YouTubers relaying what Rockstar told them in previews, not through anything Rockstar published itself. For the biggest game of the decade, that’s a strange way to communicate.
To be fair, the stuff that matters most for a GTA game, the setting, the leads and the sheer density of the world, looks like a real step up from GTA 5 based on the official trailers. Two leads who actually like each other could give the story more heart than GTA 5’s midlife-crisis heist crew. We just want Rockstar to say more of this out loud.
