Is GTA 6 coming to PC? What Rockstar’s history says

Image: Rockstar Games

Updated Sep 28, 2026: Still no PC version announced. Added Strauss Zelnick’s Sept 17 shareholder-meeting comments and the latest PC rumor.

Short answer: no, not yet. As of Sep 28, 2026, there’s no GTA 6 PC version announced, and Rockstar hasn’t given one a date or even a year. The game launches Nov 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and that’s it. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick keeps talking about PC like it matters a lot, but every time he’s asked about GTA 6 specifically, he points to one thing: “historically Rockstar’s gone to console first.” So a PC port is very likely at some point. When is the real question, and Rockstar’s own track record is the best clue we’ve got.

GTA 6 PC: what’s official right now

Here’s everything that’s actually on the record, in order:

  • Every official announcement lists consoles only. Rockstar’s pre-order announcement covers PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. No PC store page, no PC pre-orders, no PC specs.
  • May 2024, “in due time.” At a TD Cowen conference, Zelnick was asked if the lack of a PC announcement was set in stone. His answer was a famous bit of executive word salad, but it ended with “Rockstar has an approach to platforms which we’ve seen before, and they will make more announcements in due time” (VGC transcribed it).
  • May 2026, “console first.” Speaking with Bloomberg at a conference in Las Vegas, Zelnick said a big title’s PC share “can be 45%, 50% of the sales”, but that “Rockstar always starts on console” to serve the core audience. Asked whether Sony had paid for a console exclusivity window, he said no: “historically Rockstar’s gone to console first” (VGC).
  • Sept 17, 2026, “more and more important.” At Take-Two’s annual shareholder meeting, Zelnick answered what he called “a question regarding the cadence of PC launches” by saying the company aims “to launch for any platforms for which there’s a meaningful audience” and that “the PC platform is becoming more and more important to our company over time” (Screen Rant).

Notice what’s missing from all of that: the words “GTA 6 is coming to PC.” Nobody at Take-Two or Rockstar has said it. What they’ve said, over and over, is that PC is huge and that Rockstar does consoles first. Put those two together and you get the answer everyone already assumes: it’s coming, later.

Rockstar’s console-to-PC gaps, game by game

Rockstar has done this with basically every big open-world game it has made in the last two decades. Here’s how long PC players had to wait each time:

GameConsole launchPC launchWait
GTA IVApr 29, 2008 (PS3, Xbox 360)Dec 2, 2008 (North America)About 7 months
GTA VSept 17, 2013 (PS3, Xbox 360)Apr 14, 2015About 19 months
Red Dead Redemption 2Oct 26, 2018 (PS4, Xbox One)Nov 5, 2019Just over a year
Red Dead RedemptionMay 18, 2010 (PS3, Xbox 360, North America)Oct 29, 2024More than 14 years

Sources: GTA IV dates from Wikipedia; GTA V from Wikipedia and Rockstar’s “GTA V is now available for PC” Newswire post; Red Dead Redemption 2 from Rockstar’s PC announcement and Wikipedia; Red Dead Redemption from Rockstar’s PC announcement and Wikipedia.

A few things jump out. GTA IV’s wait was the shortest, and it’s the only time a mainline GTA reached PC in the same calendar year as consoles. GTA V is the other extreme. It skipped PC entirely at launch, showed up on PS4 and Xbox One in November 2014, and only then reached PC in April 2015, so Rockstar sold it across two console generations before PC players got a copy. Red Dead Redemption 2 landed right in the middle at about a year, which is the most recent “normal” Rockstar port. And the original Red Dead? That’s the cautionary tale. PC players waited 14 years, and it finally arrived as a port Rockstar made in collaboration with Double Eleven.

So when could GTA 6 hit PC? (Our speculation)

This section is our guesswork, not anything Rockstar has announced. If you line up the gaps above against a Nov 19, 2026 console launch, you get a rough range:

  • The GTA IV pace (about 7 months): summer 2027.
  • The Red Dead Redemption 2 pace (about a year): late 2027.
  • The GTA V pace (about 19 months): mid-2028.

Our best guess is somewhere between the RDR2 and GTA V timelines, so late 2027 into 2028. Why not sooner? Because every signal from Take-Two says the console launch is the whole show right now, and Rockstar has never rushed a PC version out the door. Why not later? Because Zelnick himself says PC can be close to half the sales of a big game, and Take-Two answers to shareholders who can do that math.

There’s also a rumor pushing the other way. On a Sept 4 episode of the VGC podcast, journalist Andy Robinson said there’s industry chatter that the PC version could arrive sooner than people expect, possibly because PS5 supply might be tight around launch (Vice wrote it up). Treat that as rumor. Robinson didn’t cite a specific source, and Rockstar hasn’t commented. It’s a vibe, not a date.

One more thing to ignore: any site selling you a “GTA 6 PC download” or quoting official PC system requirements. There aren’t any. Rockstar hasn’t published PC specs, because there’s no announced PC version to spec.

Why Rockstar keeps doing consoles first

Rockstar and Take-Two’s own explanation is the “core consumer” line: launch where your biggest, most dedicated audience is, and make that version as good as possible first. For GTA, that’s console players, and shipping on two console families instead of three platforms keeps the target smaller while the team polishes.

The part they don’t say out loud is also pretty obvious: a staggered release lets Rockstar sell the game twice. GTA V is the textbook case: PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013, PS4 and Xbox One in 2014, PC in 2015, and plenty of fans bought it more than once. A PC launch a year or so later becomes its own marketing moment, with better graphics options and fresh headlines, instead of one version among many on day one.

If you’re a PC player who can’t wait, the honest options are grabbing a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, or waiting it out. Just know that if you buy on console now, there’s no announced upgrade path to a future PC version.

Let’s be real: PC players deserve better than “in due time”

We get the business logic. We just don’t love where it leaves a big chunk of the audience.

  • The numbers don’t match the strategy. Zelnick himself says PC can be “45%, 50% of the sales” of a big title. If PC is potentially half the market, telling that half to wait a year or more with no date is a strange way to treat them.
  • “In due time” was two years ago. Zelnick said Rockstar would “make more announcements in due time” back in May 2024. It’s now late 2026, the console version is weeks away, and PC players still don’t have a single official sentence about their version.
  • Silence fuels scams and clickbait. With no official word, search results fill up with fake PC download pages, made-up system requirements and “confirmed” release dates that aren’t. A simple “PC is planned, more later” from Rockstar would clear a lot of that out.
  • The track record isn’t all good news. The first Red Dead took 14 years to show up on PC. “Rockstar always gets there eventually” is true, but “eventually” has meant anything from months to more than a decade.

To be fair, Rockstar’s recent PC versions have mostly been worth the wait. GTA V on PC arrived with 4K and 60fps support, and Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC shipped with visual and technical upgrades over the console original. If GTA 6 on PC follows that pattern, the wait might pay off. We’d just like Rockstar to say it’s coming.
