GTA 6 Online: what Rockstar has said about the next GTA Online

Image: Rockstar Games

Updated Sep 28, 2026: Added Strauss Zelnick’s Sept 17 shareholder-meeting comments and the Twitch CEO’s “next year” multiplayer claim. Still nothing official from Rockstar about a new online mode.

Short answer: GTA 6 Online isn’t launching with the game. GTA 6 arrives Nov 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as a single-player experience, and Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick told shareholders on Sept 17 that there’s “no recurrent consumer spending anticipated with regard to this launch”. Translation: no online mode and no microtransactions on day one. A new GTA Online is almost certainly coming later, but Rockstar hasn’t announced it, named it or dated it. Meanwhile, the GTA Online you already play isn’t going anywhere.

For the release date, price and preload details, our GTA 6 release date hub has everything. This page is just about online: what’s official, what’s reported, what’s pure rumor, and what it means for your current GTA Online character.

What Rockstar and Take-Two have actually said about GTA 6 Online

Not a lot, and that’s on purpose. Here’s the full paper trail:

  • June 2026, the pre-order announcement. The official press release describes GTA 6 as a single-player experience. The only online mention is a free month of GTA+ for digital pre-orders, pitched as the best way to enjoy “the ever-evolving world of GTA Online.” That’s GTA 5’s online, not a new one.
  • Aug 2026, the earnings call. Asked about GTA Online’s update cadence, Zelnick said Take-Two applies “significant resources” to it and does “expect to support Grand Theft Auto Online going forward” (Screen Rant has the full quote).
  • Sept 17, 2026, the shareholder meeting. Zelnick repeated that GTA 6 launches as a single-player game on two platforms, and said GTA 5’s online component “continues to be a robust business for us” (Inven Global).

Read those three together and the message is pretty clear. Take-Two is selling GTA 6 as a $79.99 story game first, and it’s keeping the old money machine running in the meantime. Notice Zelnick’s wording, though: “this launch.” He didn’t say GTA 6 will never have online or microtransactions. He said they aren’t part of November.

Reported vs. rumored: when could GTA 6 Online launch?

This is where it gets fuzzy, so we’re splitting it by how much you should trust each claim.

Reported (credible, not confirmed): In August, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier said Rockstar “has not talked at all and is not planning to talk anytime soon” about what the new GTA Online will look like (PCGamesN). Schreier has the best Rockstar track record in games journalism, so we’d take that one to the bank. Expect silence until after launch.

Reported, from an unusual source: Then came the Twitch CEO. Talking to Bloomberg around Tokyo Game Show, Dan Clancy said his team had spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about its plans, and predicted an “even bigger” streaming bump “next year when they launch multiplayer” (PC Gamer has more). That points to 2027. It’s a big claim from someone with real access, but Rockstar hasn’t confirmed it, and a partner exec guessing at another company’s roadmap isn’t an announcement.

Rumor (treat with salt): Everything else. Specific “GTA 6 Online” months, a battle royale, a paid standalone launch, cross-progression from GTA 5. You’ll see all of it on YouTube thumbnails. None of it comes from Rockstar or a named, reliable reporter, so we’re not repeating dates.

History backs up the “later, not day one” idea. GTA Online launched Oct 1, 2013, two weeks after GTA 5’s Sept 17 release. Red Dead Online’s beta opened Nov 27, 2018, about a month after Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar likes to let the story game breathe before the online servers take over. The difference this time is that nobody at Take-Two is even hinting at a window, which suggests a longer gap than two weeks.

What happens to GTA Online on PS4, PS5, Xbox and PC?

Your character is safe for now. Here’s the platform-by-platform picture:

PlatformGTA Online status (Sep 2026)
PS5 / Xbox Series X|SFully supported; Take-Two says support continues after GTA 6
PCSupported; no end date announced
PS4 / Xbox OneStill online, no official end date; free upgrade to PS5 / Series X|S since June 18
PS3 / Xbox 360Shut down Dec 16, 2021

The PS4 and Xbox One situation is the one to watch. On June 18, Rockstar made the upgrade from the PS4 version or the digital Xbox One version to the current-gen editions completely free, and Push Square notes that your Online progress migrates too. That’s the kind of thing a publisher does when it’s getting ready to wind down old hardware. A rumor that the summer 2026 update would be the last big one for PS4 and Xbox One has been floating around since May, but nobody has a named source and Rockstar hasn’t said a word. If you’re still on last-gen, take the free upgrade anyway. It costs nothing.

There’s precedent for how a shutdown goes, too. When Rockstar ended GTA Online on PS3 and Xbox 360, it announced the date well ahead of time and stopped selling Shark Cards on those consoles first. We’d expect the same if PS4 and Xbox One are next.

The roleplay wildcard

One official move gets overlooked in the GTA 6 Online talk. In August 2023, Rockstar announced that Cfx.re, the team behind the FiveM and RedM roleplay platforms, was officially part of Rockstar Games. GTA roleplay servers are a huge part of why GTA 5 still dominates Twitch, which also explains why Twitch’s CEO is so interested in Rockstar’s plans. Rockstar hasn’t said roleplay will be part of GTA 6 Online. But buying the biggest roleplay team around, and then letting it keep running, tells you the studio has noticed. Anything beyond that is speculation.

Let’s be real: GTA Online’s money habits deserve a hard look

We love a good heist. We just don’t love everything that came with GTA Online’s success, and GTA 6 Online will be built on the same playbook.

  • Shark Cards shaped the whole economy. For years, GTA Online’s prices for cars, businesses and properties kept climbing, and the fastest way to afford them was buying in-game cash with real money. Grinding is possible. It’s also clearly designed to make Shark Cards look tempting.
  • GTA+ keeps getting pricier. The subscription launched in March 2022 and went from $5.99 to $7.99 a month in April 2024, a 33% jump in the US and 40% in the UK, per VGC. Now it’s the pre-order bonus for a brand-new game. That’s a subscription funnel, not a gift.
  • “No microtransactions at launch” is doing a lot of work. It’s good news for November. But Zelnick’s phrasing only covers “this launch.” The moment online arrives, the recurring spending arrives with it, and Take-Two’s investors know it.
  • The single-player DLC drought could repeat. GTA IV got two story expansions. GTA 5 got zero. Rockstar’s Imran Sarwar later said that with next-gen ports, GTA Online and Red Dead Redemption 2 all competing for resources, story expansions weren’t “possible or necessary” (GameSpot). If GTA 6 Online turns into the same money machine, Jason and Lucia’s story may end at the credits.
  • Red Dead Online is the cautionary tale. In July 2022, Rockstar said it was steadily moving resources to the next GTA and that Red Dead Online would no longer get major themed content updates (VGC). An online mode that doesn’t print Shark Card money doesn’t get much love.

To be fair, GTA Online has earned a lot of goodwill too. It’s been running for 13 years, it’s still getting big updates like July’s Kortz Center Heist, and Zelnick himself admitted on the earnings call that some updates “have been less successful” than others, which is more honesty than you usually get from a CEO. And launching GTA 6 as a pure single-player game is the right call. We just want Rockstar to prove it can run a new online world without turning the base game into a storefront.

What’s next

Don’t expect GTA 6 Online news before Nov 19. The most likely moment for a reveal is after launch, once the story game has had its moment, possibly around Take-Two’s next earnings calls. We’ll update this page the second Rockstar says anything. Until then, our GTA 6 vs GTA 5 breakdown covers what’s changing between the games, and PC players can check our GTA 6 PC explainer for the other big question Rockstar keeps dodging.

So what do you actually want from GTA 6 Online: a fresh start with a new character, or a way to carry your GTA 5 empire over? And would you pay for GTA+ again? Tell us in the comments.
