During a Q&A event following the world premiere of the DC Animated Film Gotham by Gaslight, attended by SBM, DC animated guru Bruce Timm announced that Superman: Red Son would be the next Elseworlds film in mind for the DC Animated Universe.
Red Son is the iconic Superman storyline in which Kal-El’s spacecraft lands on a Ukranian farm rather than in Smallville, Kansas. The Soviet Union then uses Superman as a weapon during the Cold War. The story was published in 2003 and was written by renowned writer Mark Millar.
This isn’t the first time Red Son has been in the news lately either. It was reported last year that Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts pitched a movie based on the storyline to Warner Brothers, intending it to be a sort of offshoot of the current DC Films universe.
It was also stated by Timm that the film would only be made if Gotham by Gaslight sold well. That hasn’t been much of a problem for DC animated films which are known for their high quality and critical success.

Gotham by Gaslight: In an age of mystery and superstition, how would the people of Gotham react to a weird creature of the night, a bat-garbed vigilante feared by the guilty and the innocent alike? The very first Elseworlds tale re-imagines the Dark Knight detective in the Victorian era and puts him against the infamous serial killer Jack the Ripper.
