*Spoilers for Solo: A Star Wars Story ahead*
If you’ve seen Solo: A Star Wars Story then you know it featured a surprise cameo from prequel villain Darth Maul. The former Sith Lord was revealed to be the one behind Crimson Dawn and Dryden Vos. Following Vos’ death, Maul told Qi’ra, who appeared to have taken control of the crime syndicate, to meet him on Dathomir. That moment seemingly set up the characters for a future film which may very well be one that was just confirmed to be in development.
Earlier this week, it was reported that Logan director James Mangold was set to co-write and direct a Boba Fett spinoff film. This project has been in development for quite some time, with Josh Trank being chosen to helm it before the debacle that was Fantastic Four. Simon Kinberg was then reported to be involved before it was announced that he would co-write the film with Mangold. This will be the character’s first live-action appearance since his untimely demise at the hand of the Sarlacc Pit in Return of the Jedi.
With Boba Fett now on the table, a sequel to Solo seems less likely than ever. The film left what appeared to be a window for a potential sequel, however, with it struggling at the box office, Lucasfilm will turn to Fett to expand on the Star Wars criminal underworld. The perfect place to take the story is to have Fett face off with Maul in the upcoming spinoff.
If you’re unfamiliar with Darth Maul outside of his appearance in The Phantom Menace, it’s quite a compelling tale. Maul survived his initial defeat at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi only to become a rage-fueled monster hellbent on revenge. He builds a criminal empire before eventually taking over the planet Mandalore. That location is home to a warmongering people who are known for their iconic armor. That armor, of course, is the one that Boba Fett dons.
We now know that Boba is not of Mandalorian descent but the clone of Jango, the man who was the model for all the Clone troopers. Jango was adopted by the Mandalorians following the death of his parents and became a renowned bounty hunter. It would be easy to plot a story thread involving Boba attempting to find Maul following the events on Mandalore. The other major factor could be Crimson Dawn. Dryden Vos mentioned alliances with multiple other crime syndicates that have deep canon backstories and any one of them could have crossed paths with Boba at some point.
The only hiccup for this idea is if Lucasfilm decides to set the Boba Fett movie after Return of the Jedi. For years, fans have been clamoring for an explanation as to the fate of Boba. As interesting as that would be, pitting two fan-favorite characters like Maul and Boba Fett against each other could make for one hell of a film.
