We’re just a few weeks away from the highly-anticipated, animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Sony is already announcing further plans for their universe. This is the first news that the Spider-Verse would grow. Now, this is not just with a sequel, but also a spinoff. This great news is followed up by reports that familiar talent will return as well as great newcomers.

First, a direct sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has been announced. It will be directed Joaquim Dos Santos, whose extensive background includes directing episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Justice League Unlimited, and Voltron. This sequel will most likely continue the stories of Miles Morales.

The other big news is that Sony is giving the go ahead on an all-female spinoff in the Spider-Verse animated universe. Lauren Montgomery, who also worked on Voltron, as well as co-directed Batman: Year One, is in negotiations to direct the spinoff. No details or characters have been announced for the project. Amy Pascal will be back to produce and Phil Lord and Chris Miller are expected to be involved.
