At the end of Captain America: Civil War, it was revealed to the audience that, following the Revelation that Bucky Barnes could be turned back into The Winter Soldier: Assassin for HYDRA with just the reciting a few trigger words in Russian.

However, as the first trailer for Avengers: Infinity War revealed,  Bucky is able to stand side-by-side with Captain America, The Black Widow, and T’Challa as they all go to war with the army of Thanos. While many assumed this would be the case, few knew exactly how this would come to be.

Within the pages of Avengers: Infinity War Prelude No. 1, in stores now, fans are shocked to read that Bucky was not actually being frozen but was being prepped for some kind of mind-altering procedure that could, if successful, bring the hero back to the same, kind Bucky fans grew to love in Captain America: The First Avenger.

T’Challa’s sister Shuri who is described as “the most gifted scientist in Wakanda,” plans to “reboot” Bucky’s mind, freeing him of the trigger phrases that transform him into the psychopath we see during the events of Captain America: Civil War.

Shuri explains that she will be using some of Wakanda’s next level technology and artificial intelligence to restore the mind of Bucky. She also brags about the fact that she is smarter than Tony Stark, which just may prove to be true over the course of the next few films to be released in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The issue also reveals that Steve Rogers, Sam Wilson, and the Black Widow are busy tracking down the terrorist cells all over the world who are using technology created from weapons discovered from the Battle of New York in 2012.

Avengers: Infinity War Prelude No. 1 is available now digitally and in comic book stores; the second issue will be released next month
