This past weekend, we provided character details for Pedro Pascal in Wonder Woman 1984. We now have an update to add to the story. We couldn’t reveal beforehand as we were not able to confirm, but we can now report that his character is, in fact, Maxwell Lord.
The iconic DC villain will make his big screen debut next year in Wonder Woman 1984; however, he’ll be slightly different than his comic-book counterpart. We hear this version of Maxwell Lord is more “hammy” than people would expect and it will be evident they have gone with a more liberal take on the character. One thing that will differentiate him from his comic counterpart is the fact that he won’t have the psychic powers that he sometimes wields in the comics.
As we previously reported, Pascal’s character will play a major role in the resurrection of Steve Trevor. With that being said, the one correction we need to make is our reporting that Pascal was playing an undercover god, ala Ares. According to our sources, that was at one point in the script but has since changed. Lord’s story in the film will still deal with the Greek Gods. In fact, his mission in the film is to become a god himself using any means necessary.
Fans have speculated since we got our first look at Pascal in the film that he could be playing Lord and some fans were disappointed following our last report. We apologize for the hiccup but what we can confirm is that we will be getting the best of both worlds, meaning Lord will be the eccentric and determined man we know from the comics but with a hint of Wonder Woman mysticism added.
Lord has been a fan-favorite choice to join the DCEU for some time. He’s someone Wonder Woman is very familiar with in the comics, which only makes his inclusion in the film that much more sweet. This will mark Lord’s first live-action appearance in a DC movie, with his first TV appearance coming in the first season of Supergirl played by Peter Facinelli.
Directed by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman 1984 stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, and Pedro Pascal.
