The firing of director James Gunn may have pushed back Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. further back than initially thought. According to Production Weekly (via PursueNews), production on the MCU film will begin in 2021.
Following the decision to fire Gunn, GOTG Vol. 3 was put on indefinite hold. The movie was set to begin production in February of next year, with a May 2020 release date in mind. If Production Weekly is to be believed, that timetable has been pushed back almost two years, meaning we may not see the movie until 2022 or 2023.
Also mentioned in the listing was that the fact that Gunn is still credited as the writer on the movie. At one point, it was unclear if Disney planned to use their former director’s script, but that has since been worked out. Another note buried in the listing is that the movie has received the working title “Hot Christmas”.
The search for a director for GOTG Vol 3. is still underway as it’s been reported that Marvel has met with potential candidates. Names have yet to be leaked, but Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi had a meeting with the studio in recent months which was potentially for the director-needy film.
