James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe is four entries deep on screen, with two more landing before Halloween. So yeah, the DCU timeline is officially complicated enough to need a guide. Here’s the release order, a story-order version with the caveats spelled out, which old DCEU stuff still counts, where everything streams, and what DC Studios has lined up through 2027.
The DCU timeline in release order
This is the order we’d go with for a first watch. Gunn said early on that the timeline was basically running in release order “as of now,” with flashbacks as the exception. That held up until Clayface broke the pattern this year.

Quick notes. Creature Commandos is technically first, and it’s easy to skip because it’s animated. Don’t. It sets up Amanda Waller’s Task Force M, introduces the DCU versions of Rick Flag Sr. and a very bad-tempered Bride, and it’s where the DCU’s Clayface first showed up (TheWrap notes the character’s recent turn there). It’s also only seven half-hour episodes. Easy.
Peacemaker season 2 is the one people most want to skip if they never saw season 1. We’d push back on that. Honestly, it’s the most direct setup we’ve had for the next Superman film, and it moves a lot of the DCU’s government-and-metahumans plumbing around. More on the season 1 problem below.
The whole run adds up to roughly 13 hours before Clayface, by ComicBook.com’s count. That’s a long weekend, not a second job.
The DCU in chronological (story) order
This is where it gets messy, so let’s be upfront about why. Two entries don’t sit neatly on the timeline:
- Clayface is set before Superman. Gunn confirmed on Threads that the film comes “before” Superman and called it “the first DCU film out of chronological order.” He hasn’t given it a year, so we don’t know exactly how far back it goes.
- Lanterns spans three eras. The show opens with a 1996 scene, spends most of its running time in 2016, and jumps to 2026, which lands after Superman and Peacemaker season 2. Plot twist: Hal Jordan has been a Green Lantern for decades by the time Superman goes public. That’s a big deal for how the DCU treats its heroes.
With those caveats, here’s the best-fit story order:
- Lanterns, mostly its 1996 and 2016 material (the 2026 scenes technically belong at the end of this list)
- Clayface, the earliest DCU film. Whether it’s set before or after Lanterns‘ 2016 story hasn’t been confirmed.
- Creature Commandos season 1
- Superman, set in mid-2025
- Peacemaker season 2
- Supergirl, set about a year after Superman’s public reveal
- Lanterns, the 2026 scenes
Can you actually watch it that way? Not cleanly. Lanterns weaves its timelines together inside episodes, so a strict chronological watch means pausing mid-episode to go watch four other things. ComicBook.com nailed it: “You cannot do that without an editing bay.”
Our advice: save story order for a rewatch, and even then watch Lanterns in one piece, either first or last. The show’s reveals are built around its time jumps, and chopping it up wrecks them.
Which DCEU movies and shows still count?
Short version: very little, and only case by case. The DCU is a fresh continuity, so Henry Cavill’s Superman, the Snyder films, Aquaman, The Flash and the rest are out. Gunn has said a “rough memory” of some older projects carries over, but a moment only becomes DCU canon if a DCU project refers to it directly.

Peacemaker season 1 is the odd one out. It was made as a DCEU show, but season 2 treats it as history, with the Justice League cameo from its finale swapped for DCU characters after the fact. Wild, but it works. If you only watch one pre-DCU thing, make it this. If you’ve got room for two, add The Suicide Squad, which is also just a very good time.
And The Batman? Matt Reeves’ Batman films are “Elseworlds,” a separate continuity from the DCU. The Batman: Part II is now dated for Feb 18, 2028, and it won’t affect anything on this list. The DCU’s own Batman is coming in The Brave and the Bold, which is still in development.
Where to stream the DCU
This part’s easy. Every DCU film and series released so far is on HBO Max in the US, as ComicBook.com confirmed on Sep 23, with the last two Lanterns episodes arriving weekly through Oct 4. Superman and Supergirl are also available to buy or rent digitally, and Supergirl hit 4K, Blu-ray and DVD on Sep 8.
Clayface is theatrical only from Oct 23. Warner Bros. hasn’t announced a digital or HBO Max date. For a rough guide, Superman reached HBO Max about 10 weeks after release and Supergirl took about 11, so an early-January streaming debut for Clayface would fit the pattern. That’s our guess, not an announcement.
What’s next on the DCU timeline
- Clayface – Oct 23, 2026, theaters. The DCU’s first R-rated film, a body-horror story from director James Watkins. Our Clayface release date and cast guide has everything confirmed so far, and our Clayface review goes up at release.
- Lanterns season 2 – not ordered yet. A writers’ room is working on pitches, but HBO hasn’t committed, per Screen Rant’s summary of a report from The Ankler. Our Lanterns season 1 review weighs in on whether it’s earned one.
- Creature Commandos season 2 – in production, confirmed by Gunn, with no date. 2027 looks likely given how long animation takes.
- Man of Tomorrow – Jul 9, 2027. Gunn’s Superman sequel, which started filming this spring, pairs David Corenswet’s Superman with Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor against Brainiac, played by Lars Eidinger.
- The People v. Gorilla Grodd – an eight-episode HBO Max comedy from the American Vandal creators, a true-crime spoof with Skyler Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen reinvestigating Jimmy Tatro’s Grodd. No date yet; reports place it after Man of Tomorrow.
- In development, no dates: The Brave and the Bold (Batman and Robin), a Wonder Woman film, and Teen Titans. Booster Gold is back to the drawing board after HBO passed on David Jenkins’ version in July 2026. Swamp Thing, Sgt. Rock, Waller and Paradise Lost have been on hold or quiet, with no news this year.
Our take: release order is the point
The Marvel habit is to treat chronological order as the “real” way to watch. With the DCU, we don’t buy that yet. Gunn’s slate so far is built to be discovered in the order it came out. Superman drops you into a world where metahumans have been around for centuries, and part of the fun is catching up. Lanterns uses its 2016 setting to show what Hal Jordan was up to while nobody on screen was paying attention. Watch the prequel stuff first and you flatten both.
The bigger story is how much the DCU is leaning on streaming to hold it together. Supergirl made about $126 million worldwide, well short of what a film its size needed, and DC Studios’ Peter Safran admitted it didn’t meet expectations. Meanwhile Lanterns had the biggest DC Studios premiere on HBO Max. The shows are where the connective tissue lives right now, and skipping them leaves gaps in the films.
That makes Clayface a really interesting test. It’s cheap by superhero standards, R-rated, and set before everything else, so it’s the first DCU movie designed to work with zero homework. Let’s be real: the DCU’s slate has some holes
We’re into what Gunn and Safran are building. That’s exactly why the gaps bug us.
- The “quiet” pile keeps growing. Swamp Thing, Sgt. Rock, Waller and Paradise Lost have gone a whole year with no news. Announcing a slate is easy. When four projects just stop talking, fans are left guessing which ones are actually alive.
- Booster Gold hit reset. HBO passing on David Jenkins’ version in July 2026 means one of the more distinct pitches on the slate is back to square one. For a character most casual viewers don’t know yet, starting over is a real setback.
- Almost nothing is dated past 2027. Man of Tomorrow on Jul 9, 2027 is the only firm date after Clayface. Lanterns season 2 isn’t even ordered, even after the biggest DC Studios premiere on HBO Max, and Creature Commandos season 2 and the Grodd show have no dates. Hard to build a shared universe when you can’t see the road.
- The Batman question. The DCU’s Batman is still stuck in development in The Brave and the Bold, while Reeves’ separate Batman has a Feb 18, 2028 date. So the only Batman movie with a date isn’t in the DCU at all. That’s confusing for casual viewers and a missed chance for the main timeline.
To be fair, the foundation is solid. Lanterns had DC Studios’ biggest HBO Max premiere, Man of Tomorrow is already shooting, and Clayface is a low-risk way to test something weirder. What DC Studios needs now is fewer maybes and more dates.
