Stephen King’s IT: Terrifying Footage Shown at San Diego Comic Con

Director Andy Muschietti was on hand at San Diego Comic Con Wednesday night to present some new footage from the upcoming horror adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, IT. Muschietti is very excited about the project, it seems, as he says “It’s a great moment to be alive. Because It is coming back, after all this time.”

The footage was shown to a theater packed full of fans, and was presented first by a video message from Stephen King, who told those in attendance to “Enjoy this exclusive look… If you can..” Thanks to an article from Entertainment Weekly, we can break down and discuss the footage that was shown, with a total of three scenes shown.

SCENE 1

The Losers Club, in 2017’s IT

The first scene shown from the film  introduced and showcased the relationship between some of the members of The Losers Club, those members being Bill Denbrough (Whose little brother Georgie was taken by IT the autumn before), Richie ‘”Trashmouth” Tozier, Eddie Kaspbrak, Stan Uris, and Ben Hanscom. This footage was meant to showcase a Stand by Me vibe to the story, with the group hanging out and bonding over their similar problems of loneliness and bullying. It is at this point that Ben pulls out a history project he is working on about the town, and the facts he finds are truly disturbing:

Ben — the newest of the friends — pulls out a  local history project he’s been putting together. “I first moved here, I didn’t have anybody I knew. So I just started spending time at the library.”

“You went to the library… on purpose?” Richie says.

There are newspaper clippings about an Iron Works explosion that claimed scores of lives. Another about “The Black Spot,” an African-American dance club that was burned down in 1962 by a group of racists — with lots of people inside.

“Why is it all murders and missing kids,” one of them asks.

“Derry’s not like any town I’ve ever been in before,” Ben answers. “They did a study once, and it turns out people die or disappear here at six times the national average.”

“You read that?” Bev asks. “That’s just grown-ups. Kids are worse. Way worse,” Ben says. “I’ve got more stuff if you want to see it…”

SCENE 2

The second scene had a focus on the last member of the losers club, Mike Hanlon (played by Chosen Jacobs) as he is relentlessly tortured by bullies due being one of the only black people in the town of derry. This hostility and abuse is lead by the main psychotic bully, Henry Bowers, with him and his two fellow bullies lash out on Mike and hold him down to prepare to hurt him. The scene shows Mike looking desperately for help, and he spots a clown, watching him from afar, as it waves a hand. The terrifying thing about this part is, that the hand Pennywise is waving, is a dismembered one. It is a Childs hand, ripped off from the elbow. Pennywise is is nibbling on it, with it’s smile smeared with blood.

EW notes that it seems that either Pennywise is feeding off the bullies hatred, or the presence of Pennywise is making the bullies more manic than they already are. Either way, it is a disturbing and frigething scene. Right before Mike is about to get a rock to the head courtesy of Henry, a rock hits the bully first. The Losers and their barrage of rocks manage to save Mike from any further bullying. It is after this the Losers Club is united and all the gang walk down some train tracks, with Bill saying “I guess that’s one th-th-th-thing we all have in common. Welcome to the Losers Club.”

THE NEW TRAILER

After the two clips shown, the audience was then given an advance look at a new and upcoming trailer for the film, as it is narrated by one of the boys, with ominous and thoughtful commentary: “When you’re a kid, you think the universe revolves around you. That you’ll always be protected and cared for. Then, one day, you realize that’s not true.”

After this we get what we saw from the original trailer the twas released, with red balloon imagery being at the forefront of the trailer, as well as a shot of Georgie being taken in from the storm drain just like the original film, only scarier. The trailer ends with Georgie’s echoing voice as Richie running through a dark room filled with clown dolls. The dolls are all turning their faces towards Richie, and in the middle of the room is one particularly scary doll. It turns out to not be a doll, but Pennywise, as it shows off it’s razor sharp teeth and lunges at Richie, with the screen going black and the trailer ending. IT looks to be keeping it’s promise of horror and thrills, all while more or less sticking to the original critically acclaimed narrative that Stephen King put together years ago.
