Upcoming Star Wars movies and shows: every release date we know

Updated Sep 28, 2026: Added the Jon Watts trilogy report and the Maul – Shadow Lord season 2 window. We’ll update this page every time Lucasfilm dates something new.

Quick answer: The next new Star Wars release is Ahsoka season 2, streaming on Disney+ from Jan 20, 2027. After that, the original 1977 Star Wars comes back to theaters (including IMAX 70mm) on Feb 19, 2027, and the next new movie, Star Wars: Starfighter, opens May 28, 2027. Maul – Shadow Lord season 2 is due sometime in 2027. Nothing past that has a date.

Here are all the upcoming Star Wars movies and shows with a real release date, as of Sep 28, 2026. It’s a short list: two dated Disney+ seasons, one brand-new movie and one very old one. First up is Ahsoka season 2 on Jan 20, 2027. The only new film on the calendar is Shawn Levy’s Starfighter on May 28, 2027. Below you’ll find the dated slate in one table, the pile of announced-but-undated projects (with an honest read on which ones are alive), and where we think Lucasfilm’s planning has gone wrong.

Quick housekeeping: The Mandalorian and Grogu is already out and has been streaming on Disney+ since Sep 2, so it’s not on this list. It is on our list of every Star Wars movie ranked, though, if you want to know where it landed.

Upcoming Star Wars movies and shows with release dates

Everything here has been dated or given a window by Lucasfilm or at an official Disney event. Dates are US release dates.

Ahsoka season 2 – Jan 20, 2027

The next thing you can actually watch. Lucasfilm dated the season at Disney’s D23 showcase in August and dropped a teaser the same day. Rosario Dawson is back as Ahsoka, alongside Hayden Christensen’s Anakin, Eman Esfandi’s Ezra, Natasha Liu Bordizzo’s Sabine, Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Hera and Lars Mikkelsen’s Grand Admiral Thrawn, per StarWars.com. Ariana Greenblatt returns as young Ahsoka too, which lines up with the teaser’s heavy Anakin-and-Ahsoka training vibes. The premiere is on a Wednesday, TVLine notes.

Here’s the official teaser:

Star Wars (1977) back in theaters – Feb 19, 2027

Not new, but honestly one of the most exciting dates on the list. Lucasfilm is re-releasing a newly restored version of the 1977 theatrical release for a limited run to mark the film’s 50th anniversary. In September, Lucasfilm added that it’ll play in IMAX 70mm for the first time at select locations. If you’ve only ever seen the movie on a TV, this is the one to plan a trip around. Where does it sit against the other 12 films? Our Star Wars movies ranking has it at No. 2.

Star Wars: Starfighter – May 28, 2027

The only new Star Wars movie with a date. Shawn Levy directs and Ryan Gosling stars as Kade Auberon, a brand-new character, in a story set about five years after The Rise of Skywalker. The cast includes Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre and Amy Adams, per Lucasfilm. It was shot with IMAX-certified film cameras and opens on the original film’s 50th anniversary weekend, StarWars.com confirms.

If you’re hunting for a trailer: the footage Levy and Gosling showed at D23 in August was not released publicly, as of this update. We’ll embed it the moment Lucasfilm puts it online.

Maul – Shadow Lord season 2 – 2027

Dave Filoni announced a second season on Apr 2, 2026, days before season 1 premiered on Disney+. At the show’s D23 panel, head writer Matt Michnovetz said season 2 arrives in 2027. No month yet. You may see “April 2027” floating around online. That traces back to a fan account’s post, not Disney, so treat it as a guess.

Announced but undated: the Star Wars limbo list

Heads-up: none of these has a release date. Some are actively in development, some are on hold, and a couple are basically gone. We’ve sorted them from most to least alive, based on what’s been reported on the record.

A few notes on the fuzzy stuff. Most of these statuses come from Kathleen Kennedy’s exit interview with Deadline in January, right as she stepped down and Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan took over Lucasfilm. She called Waititi’s script “hilarious and great” and said Mangold’s film was “on hold.” She also said Kinberg had just turned in a roughly 70-page treatment for his trilogy. Kennedy’s view of these projects isn’t the final word, though. The new bosses get to decide.

The Watts news is a report, not an announcement. TheWrap, The Hollywood Reporter and Variety all reported it, but Lucasfilm declined to comment. The outlets don’t even agree on whether it continues the Skywalker saga or starts a new one. Watts co-created Skeleton Crew, so he isn’t new to the galaxy.

Filoni’s own crossover movie, the one announced in 2023 to wrap up the Mandalorian-era shows, doesn’t have a clear official status right now. It didn’t come up in Kennedy’s exit interview, and Lucasfilm hasn’t given a public update, so we’ve left it off the table instead of guessing.

Our take: 2027 is Star Wars’ big year, and then it’s a cliff

Look at the dated table again. It’s all packed into about five months: Ahsoka in January, the original in February, Starfighter in May, and Maul somewhere in there. That’s a strong 50th-anniversary run, and Starfighter is the most interesting swing of the bunch. New lead, new era, no Skywalkers. That’s exactly what the franchise needs after The Mandalorian and Grogu struggled, which we get into in our full Star Wars ranking.

The problem is what comes after May 2027. Not a single film or live-action series has a date. If the Watts report pans out, a new trilogy is the obvious next big movie, but a film that doesn’t have public confirmation yet is years from theaters. Our guess is that Starfighter‘s box office decides a lot of what gets greenlit next. That’s our read, not something Lucasfilm has said.

Let’s be real: Lucasfilm keeps announcing movies it doesn’t make

We love Star Wars. That’s exactly why this part is frustrating.

  • The announce-then-vanish pattern is real. Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss quit their planned trilogy in 2019. Rogue Squadron was pulled off the calendar in 2022. Rian Johnson’s trilogy is effectively dead. And the three films announced on stage at Celebration 2023 (Mangold’s, Filoni’s and the Rey movie) have produced zero release dates between them.
  • Dates keep disappearing. The Rey film had a Dec 18, 2026 slot until Disney gave it to Ice Age 6. That same holiday frame now belongs to Marvel, with Avengers: Doomsday moving to Dec 18, 2026 (our Marvel movies in order guide will get you ready). When a placeholder date goes to a talking-mammoth sequel, it’s hard to take the next placeholder seriously.
  • The theatrical gap was brutal, and the comeback stumbled. After The Rise of Skywalker in December 2019, it took until May 2026 for another Star Wars movie. When The Mandalorian and Grogu finally arrived, it opened to a series-low $98 million over Memorial Day weekend. A six-and-a-half-year wait should’ve built up demand. It didn’t.
  • Four years between Ahsoka seasons. Season 1 wrapped in October 2023, and season 2 lands in January 2027. That’s a long time to ask casual viewers to remember who Baylan Skoll was.

To be fair, there are real reasons for optimism. The dated 2027 slate is solid. Starfighter has a big star, a director who knows blockbusters and a clean-slate story. The IMAX 70mm run of the 1977 original is something fans have wanted forever. And new leadership means a chance to stop announcing and start shipping. We just want the next slate announcement to come with dates attached.

So, what are you most excited for: Ahsoka season 2, the original on a giant IMAX screen, or Gosling in Starfighter? And which limbo project do you actually want Lucasfilm to rescue? Tell us in the comments.
