Russo Brothers Seemingly Confirm Ryan Coogler’s Return To The MCU For Phase 4

There are a lot of questions and very few answers concerning Marvel’s Phase 4 inside the MCU. We know that Phase 3 ends after Infinity War, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Captain Marvel, and Avengers 4 next year. It begins with the Untitled Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel. This film, Black Panther 2 and Guardians 3 are the only things confirmed in Phase 4 so far. We’ve heard rumors about the Eternals and a crazy rumor about the X-Men this week. There’s even been a fan-made poster of all the Phase 4 movies Marvel is releasing. We only have 3 films confirmed so far though. We know two of the films’ directors, but did the Russo Brothers just leak that a director would be returning to the MCU?

The Russo Brothers let a few MCU directors for Phase 4 see the full cut of Infinity War, here’s Joe Russo’s comment:

“We allowed James [Gunn], Jon Watts, and Ryan Coogler to see it [Avengers: Infinity War] up to this point. You have to be working on a film that this movie will affect your storytelling going forward.”

We know Gunn is directing Guardians 3, Watts is directing the Spider-Man [Homecoming] sequel, but Coogler has not been confirmed to return for Black Panther 2. The film was greenlit almost immediately after Black Panther was released. This is most certainly a confirmation as they only allowed directors whose films would be affected in Phase 4 to see the film. We should not be surprised though, as Black Panther has made $677 million dollars in the U.S. and $1.3 billion worldwide. Putting atop of all superhero films all time in the box office in the U.S., third worldwide. Overall genres worldwide, it is in tenth place.

Besides the fact that Black Panther was an amazing film, these numbers definitely help Coogler’s case to return to the MCU. He started with Fruitvale Station, then Creed, and now he has Black Panther. He’s an executive producer for Creed II which will be released later this year. He recently won director of the year at Cinemacon this year. He’s truly a rising star, and along with Gunn, Anthony and Joe Russo, he will be around in the MCU for a while.

Mitch Neuhauser, Managing Director of CinemaCon said this at Cinemacon when speaking of Ryan Coogler:

“In just a few short years, Ryan Coogler has positioned himself as one of the most dynamic, talented and successful directors of our time. With the release of Black Panther, he has given us a film that is not just a box office juggernaut in grossing more than $1.3 billion globally, but a film that has crossed all cultures and ethnicities and has resonated beyond anyone’s wildest imagination from a societal standpoint. His is a landmark film and we couldn’t be more delighted to be honoring him as our Director of the Year.”
