The firing of Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has been one of the most talked about pop culture stories in recent memory. From the initial news to the reported meeting that could have led to Gunn’s reinstatement to Dave Bautista’s public outrage, this story has been a rollercoaster. Well, it looks like we may have finally reached the station.
During an interview with THR, Disney CEO Bob Iger addressed the firing of Gunn. When it was initially reported, we learned that Iger was not the one to make the decision. Chairman of Walt Disney Studios Alan Horn seemed to be the deciding factor in Gunn’s fate with the CEO taking a backseat. Iger confirmed that story during the interview:
The James Gunn decision was brought to me as a unanimous decision of a variety of executives at the studio and I supported it.
He went on to double down on the decision that was made and stand by his studio:
I haven’t second-guessed their decision.
Production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been delayed, with the 2020 release date very much in doubt. Until a new director is brought in, it’s unlikely there will be any movement on the film. It’s expected other Marvel projects currently in development will have their release dates moved up to fill the void.
