‘GAMBIT’ Producer Simon Kinberg Reveals The Film’s Romantic Comedy Vibe & 2019 Production Start Date

Even though the Disney/Fox deal is coming to a close, there remain several films from Fox based on Marvel characters currently in development such as X-Force, Multiple Man, and Gambit, the third of which has spent the longest in pre-production. It turns out that the film is now reaching the end of this phase as producer Simon Kinberg has stated the movie’s direction towards romantic comedy as well as the expected start date in early 2019.

Kinberg states that the filmmakers have chosen to give the movie a lighter tone because the character’s personality exudes a strong attitude:

“When you look at Gambit, he’s a hustler and a womanizer and we just felt like there was an attitude, a swagger to him, that lent itself to romantic comedy.”

This approach towards adjusting a movie’s tone around its central character has been present in recent X-Men related films. The tone in the Deadpool movies closely reflects the crude nature of Deadpool and the tone of Logan adopts a more somber tone fitting with the worn-out state of Logan himself.

Kinberg also goes into detail about the current states of the ongoing Fox/Marvel projects. He mentions that the production start date for Gambit in addition to saying that the script for Multiple Man is in development and that X-Force will soon begin the scripting phase:

Gambit has a great script and we’re looking to start that movie early next year. Multiple Man, that script’s being worked on right now. We’re just waiting for Drew Goddard to be done with releasing his film that comes out in a few weeks, and then he’ll get started on that script [for X-Force] to direct.”

Now that the movie has an expected production start date, it will not be long after that we see photos of Channing Tatum in action as the titular mutant with the ability to manipulate kinetic energy. It will also be interesting to see how the movie will combine big-budget spectacle with a light comedic tone.
