Since the announcement of the Disney-Fox merger, one of the main questions asked by fans was what would Marvel do with Wolverine. While many have assumed the MCU would recast the character there have been a vocal few who were hopeful Hugh Jackman would return to the role. But now Lauren Shuler Donner, producer of X-Men and all other Fox Marvel films, has confirmed Marvel is actively looking for a new star.
In a recent interview with Slashfilm, Shuler Donner revealed that Kevin Feige is indeed looking to recast Wolverine for the MCU.
“Yes,” she said. “I don’t know what Kevin’s thinking honestly. I don’t even think Kevin knows. I think Kevin’s still dealing with this wealth of characters and trying to make sense of them.”
Many fans will agree that Logan was the perfect ending to Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine so this news doesn’t come as much of a surprise. And not only does it make sense for Marvel to start over with a new actor, but it also may not be easy for Hugh Jackman to return to the role. Shuler Donner noted that the physical stress Jackman undertook to bulk up to play Logan just wasn’t feasible for him anymore.
“Yes, because Hugh, just the physicality of it all, just to bulk up,” she said. “This man worked so hard to bulk up, would get up at four in the morning to bulk and eat protein meals every two hours because his natural state, they used to call him Worm when he was a kid. So his natural state is a very skinny guy. Once you reach a certain age, the body just won’t go anymore. I think he was wise to say, ‘I’m at that point. I can’t do it.’ Now, that doesn’t mean he can’t come back as older Wolverine. You never know. Future Wolverine, you never know.”
Ultimately, while it may be disappointing to know Jackman’s run as Wolverine is indeed over it will be interesting to see a new star put on the claws.
